Billboards
Background: The negative world of advertising is not limited to the realm of print media. Indeed, one of the most common sights in urban landscapes in the United States is the advertising billboard. This particular feature focuses on this form of popular public advertising by highlighting the imagery and themes contained in this medium. The Images: Images 1-18 and 34-35 are my photos from Las Vegas; images 20-22, 24-27, 29, 31, 33 are from the Los Angeles area; while images 23, 28 and 32 are from Internet sources. Discussion Questions: (1) Are there billboards in your community? If so, do they depict gendered images or non-gendered ones? What is the proportion of gendered images? (2) Do the gendered billboard images share in common the techniques that we find in advertising images?
